That uncomfortable feeling.... Sex and Comic book creators.

I've been thinking a lot about the Brian Wood allegations of late. I'm not there, I've never been there. I've dated one woman that I met working in comics. I've certainly have been attracted to many women that I consider friends and colleagues. I would hope that I never came off as untoward but I also never actively made advances towards any of the women i've worked with. I don't know Brian, we've met, but we're not friends and don't travel in the same circles, So I can't defend him, but I also won't condemn him either.

I'm also not discounting what Tess Fowler, or some of the others have made public. However, theres a part of me that knows that outside of my work life, I had a very active dating life when I was single, and I may not have always approached it the right way. As individuals, or perception of events differ from others (The classic your version, my version and the truth somewhere in the middle comes to mind.) . the problem I have is we have reached a point in our technology, where the ability to demonize strangers, harass them, torture them has become to easy.

Is there sexism in comics? Hell yes. There's also an undercurrent of racism too. Is it good to have the conversation and try to change things, yes. however as Heidi MacDonald pointed out in her excellent article :" None of what I’ve just written about is comics behavior. It’s HUMAN behavior. There are jerks and assholes in every industry. In all the vast body of writing about the increasing tensions of men and women — many attractive, most sexually active—interacting in the comics sphere there is bad stuff that is singular to our corner of the world, but most of it is everywhere. And as women enter the field in ever greater capacities—as readers, as creators, as fans—these problems have become more common."

I don't have a catch all answer to how to change things. We live in industry that is filled with people who don't have great interpersonal skills. The concepts of personal space and inappropriate behavior tend to blur for some. Add to the mix talented, attractive, intelligent women who share the same interests that they do and some guys (And some gals too, let's be honest) Don't know what to do with themselves. (I once had a woman continuous try to paw on me at a show, grabbing my ass and aiming occasionally for the crotch.) cosplayers, who for the most part try to replicate the sexier costume designs from comics, etc. constantly have to deal with pawing hands.

There's a part of me that wants to say "It was nearly a decade ago, people change", but again, I wasn't there, i'm not a woman and I can't speak from that perspective, but as a father, I would hope that Catherine would show the same bravery as Tess Fowler and others have.
I don't think trying to ruin Brian Wood's career is the answer either.

NYCC 2013 wrapup.

A day after NYCC and I'm beat. I'm tired, and even if it's a good kind of tired, I'm exhausted.
The stress of the last two months finally subsided after the party Saturday. Once all the adrenaline left my body, I was in actual pain. My joints ached. Like any other NYCC or big convention I didn't get to see half the people I wanted to see. I made it to Artist Alley once or twice but never more than the hour I was there for Dare 2 Draw doing portfolio reviews.
Again, if you were looking for me, and couldn't find me, I apologize. Between the panels and signings in various places, i was stretched a bit thin.
The success of the launch party was key to my relief. It was overwhelmingly gratifying to have those who made it in attendance, and I thank you.
Now my next step will be fulfilling my Kickstarter orders, which will take time. I'm doing the shipping myself since I can't afford an assistant. It's my goal to get the books and prints to everyone as soon as possible.
There's also something else on the horizon, which will be announced fairly soon, and i'm excited to be involved in. It won't be as an artist, Since my work on The Terminator begins in earnest now. It will be very cool and I hope a big part of taking Molly Danger to the next level.
But for now, I rest.

Molly Danger Audio Comic preorders begin Tomorrow!

AudioComics and Action Labs present Jamal Igle’s MOLLY DANGER!
Molly Danger Art
In 2013, the audio movie studio AudioComics will release its newest AC Kids title based on the forthcoming children’s graphic novel series from industry superstar Jamal Igle (Action ComicsSupergirl,FirestormDaredevil/Shi): Molly Danger!
Produced in association with Action Lab Entertainment, and directed by AudioComics co-founder William Dufris, Molly is “the princess of finesse,” the most powerful ten-year old in the world. Protector of Coopersville, New York from the villainous Supermechs, including Two-Fisted Tommy and Lil’ Cavey, she has legions of devoted fans, movies and merchandise bearing her name, and more fame than anyone can fathom. But what she really wants more than anything…is a friend. A family. And a real life.
Meanwhile, the forces of evil are converging to rock Molly’s world. For 20 years she has been led to believe that she’s an immortal alien whose family died when their ship crash-landed on Earth, genetically altered by the earth’s atmosphere. She also believes that she is the last of her people. She is wrong–very wrong…
As with AudioComics’ productions of Titanium RainStarstruck, and Honey West: Murder on Mars, the finished work will be available on both compact disc and pay-per-Mp3 digital download, with cover art by Igle, and for sale through AudioComics’ and Action Lab’s websites, iTunes, Amazon, and at comic book and sci-fi conventions.
“This is another exciting step in getting the Action Lab brand known to comic book fans everywhere,” explained Action Lab President Kevin Freeman. “Jamal is one of the nicest guys in the industry, and not only does Molly Danger look spectacular on the printed page, but it is perfectly suited for the AudioComics treatment. We couldn’t be happier.”

Who's Getting Disintermediated? Questions for the ICv2 Conference

An ICv2 Release.  Technology is disrupting the comics and graphic novel supply chain, but who’s going to get disintermediated in the process?

We had an interesting conversation on the plane on the way out to San Diego Comic-Con with an artist who’s currently working for Marvel.  He told us of how his revenues from selling original art and prints on his Website were steadily growing, as were his Twitter followers, and how he was planning to use those assets to launch a new original Webcomic, followed by a Kickstarter, followed by traditional graphic novel publishing.

Others are going from Webcomics to digital release, to print collections.

And some forgo the Webcomics, release the installations of the product digitally, and collect them into trade paperbacks when they’ve got enough material.

Any of the models above can be coupled with merch sales direct from creator to consumer.

These business models, or elements from them, are increasingly the way that creators or publishers can launch original intellectual properties, test the reaction, hone the material, and build an audience.  The new tools enabled by technology, including direct interaction between creators and their fans, comics on the Web, digital sales of comics, and crowdfunding, can replace or enhance the traditional methods of releasing a print product, gauging the reaction, and adapting for future releases.

This new, more direct, contact between creators and fans has the potential to replace a lot of functions previously performed by publishers, distributors, and retailers, the three-tier model that’s been used to distribute comics for the past decades.

How will this impact the business going forward?  Will increasing numbers of creators opt out of the traditional distribution channels of comic stores and bookstores?

Or will they just use the new tools to build an audience, get a bigger share of the pie from their most devoted fans, and continue to use traditional publishing to reach the rest of the market?

We’ll try to find the answers at the ICv2 Conference at New York Comic Con in the panel on “From Creator to Consumer” with this panel of experts:
Calista Brill, Senior Editor, First Second Books
Simon Fraser, artist, runs the ACT-I-VATEcomix Webcomics collective
Jamal Igle, artist, successful Kickstarter publisher, lecturer
Dan Manser, Director of Marketing, Diamond Comic Distributors
John Roberts, Co-founder, comiXology
Moderated by Heidi MacDonald, comic editor and commentator from The Beat

Comics Ahead!—The ICv2 Conference will take place at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon, October 9th.

Want to come?  Register by clicking here.

For more information, click here.

And if you’d like to suggest questions or discussion topics for our panel (there’ll be lots of press at the Conference, so you’ll hear what people say even if you’re not there), feel free to contact moderator Milton Griepp (Mgriepp@icv2.com).

Secret Identity podcast

"This sounds like a lot of gushing, and that’s because it is. I think that this first quarter of Molly’s story is amazingly well-told and well-illustrated. But I also think it’s capital-I important. Mr. Igle set out to be the change he wanted to see in an industry that’s given up wonder and joy for darkness and cynicism. He could have written snarky op-eds and complained on comics news sites. Instead, he created a character that could inspire his own little girl while still remaining just as dynamic, exciting and heroic as the boys.

This is work worth doing and worth supporting. And if you don’t think so, then we probably can’t be friends anymore."-Joshua Unruh, Bookgasm.com

"I reviewed Molly Danger #1 on this week's podcast! Did I like it? Listen to find out! (p.s. LOVED it). :) - "Jimmy Aquino, Comic News Insider
http://www.comicspodcasts.com/tag/molly-danger-1/

"The bottom line? The tag line for “Molly Danger” is spot on – she IS “the hero you’ve been waiting for”. Keep an eye out for the “World’s Most Powerful 10 Year-Old” – and talk to your LCS now about ordering “Molly Danger”!" -Ed Garett, TM Smash
http://www.tmstash.com/advance-review-molly-danger-book-one-by-jamal-igle-action-lab/

"All in all this 54 pager serves as a great introduction, with a lot more Molly than danger. Nevertheless, it does a great job in showing us this fun, youthful, yet emotionally troubled, character. Molly Danger is the type of character young comic readers could relate to, whilst the older generation is left longing to give her guidance. But young or old, prepare yourself to be blown away by some truly stunning visuals." -Byron Hendricks, Fortress of Solitude
http://www.fortressofsolitude.co.za/Book-detail/molly-danger-review

"Jamal Igle set out to create a hero which reflected girls back to themselves. Not as sexualized objects of fan service, nor an attempt at equality by making a female mirror to an established male figure, but as a her own interesting personality. Not only does Molly take a much-needed shot at established masculine paradigms, but Jamal has set out to challenge the cynicism which seems to pervade sophisticated comics."- Shawn Mohr, geekyuniverse.com

http://www.geekyuniverse.com/molly-danger-the-most-powerful-girl-in-the-world/

"There’s a lot of fun to be had in this first volume as we discover who Molly is and what she stands for, while simultaneously setting up the plot to future events. I had the biggest smile on my face throughout, and anxiously await the second book. Be sure to pick up a copy when it hits stores this October, or read it now on ComiXology." -Cameron Hathaway, Bleedingcool.com
http://www.bleedingcool.com/2013/08/04/molly-danger-2/?fb_action_ids=10151764064183257&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=aggregation&fb_aggregation_id=288381481237582"If you feel like the comics industry is missing earnest, fun books that are good for all ages I implore you to go the kickstarter below and reserve yourself a copy. The character dynamics here are more satisfying than the this ostensibly action packed title would initally suggest, the art is pleasantly vibrant, and Jamal and his partners deserve the attention. In fact, what stands out the most here in this successfully kickstarted creator owned work is the heart, which is worn on its pages. "-Dr. Fluxx-Feeditcomics.com
http://www.feeditcomics.com/?p=472

"Molly Danger: Book One doesn’t just provide satisfying, entertaining, and dynamic story in its own right, but it also promises a larger narrative in future books. Igle clearly has a plan for Molly and her battle against the SuperMechs, and if Book One is any indication, it will most certainly be a good one."-Joey Braccino, talkingcomics.com

http://talkingcomicbooks.com/2013/08/molly-danger-book-one-advance-review/"The book has its pleasures for the adult reader who misses the kind of comic where a kid fights a caveman and a brain in a jar. Talking animals and robots cannot be far behind. If you have ever read Invincible and thought, “Gosh, I wish everyone in this book wasn’t gushing blood from holes made in their skin by several broken bones”—in other words, if you have ever read an issue of Invincible—you will probably find something inMolly Danger that speaks to you. The characters are relatable, likeable, and behave more or less like recognizable human beings."-
Jim Mroczkowski, Ifanboy.com
http://ifanboy.com/articles/review-molly-danger-book-one/

"Ultimately that’s what I feel the book is getting at: what’s it really mean to be human, and to be a human girl, at that? Issues with identity are ones that we struggle with from the time we hit grade school until …well, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t have questions about who they really are, to be honest, and that’s exactly what puts this book squarely in the all-ages category for me. Rather than being something cute and sweet that we can all enjoy because we all remember being young, it’s a much more serious take on experiences we all share, at all ages of life." -Jaydot Stone, the Marysue.com

"Very rarely do we get superhero comics that exude with passion for the genre, but Jamal Igle not only showed his passion, he also proved that he is worthy of joining the ranks of Robert Kirkman and Ed Brubaker in the ranks of legendary superhero authors. Molly Danger is a thrill from the very first page. If you believe that all superhero comics are the same repeated idea over and over again, then this is the book for you. Actually, if you are literate in any sense, this is the book for you."- Ronnie McNutt,
